Melissa Alfred of Marigot won two gold medals at this year's annual Windward Islands School Games. She participated in three events-shot put, javelin and discus.
[Melissa Alfred-Athlete-Discus,Shot Put, Javelin]
The 17 year-old secured gold in shot put and discus by throwing 10.56 and 34.99 meters respectively. Athough proud of her achievements, Melissa expressed disappointment for her output in the javelin event which was due in some part to the malfunctioning of her shoes!
Ms. Alfred remains positive about her abilities in all three disciplines however and is encouraged by her performance which results mainly from hard work with local coaches, Godwin Dorsette and Smith Telemaque. Coach Dorsette is also very optimistic about her potential, as it is his opinion that Melissa possesses tremendous natural talent for these events.
Melissa indicates that although there is not much external encouragement (recognition or financial) for involvement in athletics in Marigot and to some extent Dominica, her training and effort are a bonus to her. It does not only bring her the satisfaction of winning medals and competing against and surpassing other athletes but it gives her something to work towards outside the normal routine of her life. Training keeps her fit and mentally stable she explains. Since her success at the games, Melissa is even more committed to the hard work it will take to improve her personal records, discipline, and attitude towards preparation.
It is not always easy for Melissa to keep the focus however because the acquisition of proper gear and sparing of time for training can be challenging. Her parents, Nathanie “Tanie” and Francis “Mobile” Alfred support her fully but it is not always easy to spare of their limited resources for gear and travel in and out of island for competitions. Melissa is not deterred however, as in addition to continued training, she also looks forward to attending the Dominica State College in January to start the associate degree program in Nursing.
Melissa continues to prepare for her next competition, the National Independence Athletics Meet. She is determined to improve her personal best and break national records in her three events.
At the Windward Island School Games, Mr. Emmanuel Loblack served as her coach. In the team of 48 which represented Dominica, there were four other athletes from Marigot. They are Chelsea Linton (short & middle distances & Long Jump), Teresa Gordon (shot put, discuss and javelin) Lorraine Lockhart (Long distances, Netball, Volley Ball and Basketball) and Casia Begg (Volley Ball).
