Lio Park Playing Field (Lio Park) is tucked away in the south eastern corner of Sam's Gutter, Marigot, in an area known as Tara Side. The land which the park occupies was donated to the people of Marigot by the late Mr. Frobel Laville- a 1960's nominated member in the Dominica's legislature. It was the then Parliamentary Representative for Marigot, Mr. Pat Stevens and former Senator Meshach Linton who orchestrated the transfer.
Following the 1995 general elections, the area was dramatically transformed from agricultural lands covered in tree crops into one of Dominica's most beautiful sporting facilities. The playing filed was funded by grant donated to the community by the Taiwanese Government.
The scenic and natural ambience of the Park is spectacular and first time visitors are often stunned by the view presented them. The Park offers a remarkable view of the Atlantic Ocean and if lucky, one may even see whales frolicking in the coastal blue waters. From the park it is also possible to spot and monitor daily flights in and out of Melville Hall Airport, fishermen plying the seas and at nights vehicular lights from the ever-present outline of Marie Galante on the horizon.
The features of Lio Park easily make it one of the best sporting facilities in the island. The facility comprises:
1. A pavilion with 2 dressing rooms for teams. Each dressing room has 12 players' lockers, one face basin, two toilets and one shower.
2. An official dressing room with full washroom facilities and 5 lockers
3. One kitchen
4. One office space
5. One mess hall which can double as a meeting space
6. One public toilet block
7. One wooden/concrete stand that seats 650 spectators
8. Two concrete confectionary stands with water and electricity.
The field was spontaneously named Lio Park by the community due to the fact that the area was the residence of Mr. Lionel Laville, who was popularly known as Lio. In the 1950's, Mr. Lionel Laville was Minister of Communications and Works and is credited with the construction of the Melville Hall Airport and trans-insular road from Marigot to Roseau and with the completion of the first pipe-borne water system from Batacca to Atkinson.
Presently, Lio Park is being used to host the Northern District Harris Paints Cricket League matches and it is a very popular venue for staging 'big' games such as tournament finals, semifinals, and openings. The Dominica Amateur Athletics Association and Sports Division are two agencies which have utilized the facility for national athletics meets and cricket matches, respectively. Currently, Lio Park is the home ground of the Marigot Cricket Team.
Lio Park has been earmarked as one of the venues for hosting events for the 2007 Marigot Village Reunion planned for the period April 26 to May 7. This event will be in the form of a village fun day with an exhibition, traditional games and May Pole dancing. During the reunion there are also tentative plans to host a major OECS May Pole Competition at Lio Park.
The Park's management is currently being undertaken by the Lio Park Management Committee as follows:
The Lio Park Management Committee knows, notwithstanding the fact that the Park is regarded as one of the best in the island, that there is need for further development. These improvements will position the Park to take advantage of opportunities in the near future, such major regional cricketing activity is held in Dominica.
It is also important that the improvements result in improving the Park's income generating capabilities, as the management's main aim is to make the Park self-sustaining. The overall objective is to make the Lio Park Playing Field one that all Marigotians will be very proud of.
